Annealing is a critical step in the manufacturing of custom glass products, yet it is often overlooked by those unfamiliar with glass processing. This controlled cooling process is essential for ensuring the structural integrity, durability, and safety of glass items. Here is why annealing is indispensable for custom glass products.
Understanding Internal Stress
During the forming process, glass is subjected to high temperatures and rapid cooling. As the outer surface cools and solidifies while the inner core remains hot and fluid, a condition of internal stress develops. This stress, known as thermal stress, arises because different parts of the glass cool at different rates.
If these stresses are not relieved, the glass becomes brittle and can fracture spontaneously, even without external force. The stress can also cause the glass to break when exposed to temperature changes or mechanical shock. For custom glass products, which are often designed for specific applications, this risk is unacceptable.
The Annealing Process
Annealing is the process of controlled cooling that eliminates internal stresses. The glass is then cooled slowly and uniformly to room temperature. The rate of cooling is carefully controlled to prevent the development of new stresses. This final cooling step is as critical as the initial heating and holding phases.

The consequences of inadequate annealing are serious. Products may develop cracks or fractures due to residual stress, and these defects can occur spontaneously. Even if they do not break immediately, the glass becomes significantly weaker and more prone to failure. The optical clarity of the glass can also be compromised, with the appearance of veiling or haze.
